Campaign Photos Shot in Town, You Guess Where

Richard Carr and Ian White won their race for president and vice president of their Tampa Catholic senior class. Their campaign posters featured two photographs from the Bloomingdale-Riverview area. Can you guess where they were shot?

When Richard Carr and Ian White set out to become president and vice president of their 2013-14 senior class at Tampa Catholic, they knew they wanted to infuse the arts into both their platform and their campaign.

That's why the upcoming seniors, who live in Bloomingdale and met in kindergarten at St. Stephen Catholic School, thought long and hard about the settings for their campaign posters.

"We were looking for a flat area, where we could get that perspective shot," White said. "We wanted it to look like the wall was a road and the road next to it looked like a wall."

For their second shot, the 17-year-olds sought "a cool background to shoot against," White said. "We wanted to give it a good culture look, kind of raw but not too crazy, something everybody could relate to."

Expressing themselves through the arts is nothing new to the upcoming seniors, who aim to infuse the arts even more so into their school community — as evidenced by the thinking behind their campaign posters.

"We didn't just want a sign saying something, we wanted a piece of art," White said. "We wanted something that had meaning and character."

The arts are nothing new to the lifelong friends.

They play heavy metal blues together at community events, most recently at the Winthrop Arts Festival and, coming soon, at the May 18 Crawfish Festival at FishHawk Ranch.

Aside from it being in the family, "music is always there," said Carr, who received his first full drum set two years ago before playing and commenting at the October 2012 Battle of the Bands contest hosted by the Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department at the Hillsborough County Fair. "If something doesn't work out, I always have science and music."

White plays the guitar; Carr, the drums. Both are members of the Tampa Catholic Drum Line, for which Carr on April 30 was inducted as next year's captain.

White is both a trained and self-taught musician, having taken lessons in guitar, clarinet and saxophone. He plays electric, bass, acoustic and 12-string guitar and taught himself how to play the mandolin, harmonica and piano.

He also is a prolific songwriter, as demonstrated at community events, where he often plays and sings his music.

"I like writing songs," he said. "It's my main way to express my character. I feel like my role in life is to effect other people, to teach them, and the best way to get through to somebody is through song and literature."
