Bloomingdale High Student Wins Jackie Robinson Essay Contest

Peter Hanhan was honored Tuesday by the baseball great's daughter and received World Series tickets after sharing his courageous personal story in the national contest.

A student is going to the World Series this year.

Wherever it's held, it will be a long way from the war-torn homeland he and his family fled from nine years ago.

Ninth-grader Peter Hanhan won first place in a national essay contest in which he shared the story of his family's forced removal from their war-torn West Bank home, MLB.com reports.

The contest honors the legacy of Jackie Robinson, who broke Major League Baseball's color barrier, and recognizes courage in the face of adversity.

Hanhan and his classmates were visited Tuesday by Robinson's daughter, Sharon, an author who organized the essay contest. As part of his prize, Hanhan receieved the World Series tickets and a laptop and was recognized at Tropicana Field on Tuesday night before the Tampa Bay Rays' game — the first pro sporting event he attended.
