Area Schools to Participate in 9/11 Remembrance Activities

Newsome High School, Randall Middle School and Kingsway Elementary School are among the schools that will host special observances.

Local schools will commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11 in various ways this Friday, Sept. 9.

Among the observances is a Patriots Day Celebration at 9:30 a.m. at Kingswood Elementary School, 3102 S. Kings Ave., Brandon.

Each grade level will wear an assigned colored shirt (red, white or blue). The classes will then gather by shirt color around the school flag pole. Patriotic songs will be performed by each grade, and the Tampa Bay Technical High School color guard will conduct a flag ceremony and pledge.

Students have artistically illustrated symbols of peace, unity and America, mounted on red, white or blue construction paper. The signs will be displayed throughout the school's courtyard Friday.

Symbols include white doves, a white rose, the American flag, a firefighter's helmet, hands held together, an eagle, the Statue of Liberty, the memorial of 9/11, an olive branch, a policeman's hat and a song sheet of “God Bless America.”

On display in the cafeteria will be the the uniform of a Marine who perished in the War on Terror, related to one of the students.

The students also are making memorial white lapel ribbons to be worn by each student, faculty member, administrator and all support personnel.

At Randall Middle School, 16510 FishHawk Blvd., Lithia, students have spent the week learning about the causes and impacts of the events of Sept. 11, 2001.

In addition, the students have all participated in creating individual red, white and blue markers. Each marker includes the name of a victim of the 9/11 attacks.

On Friday, throughout the day, each student will place a marker on the front lawn at Randall Middle School. By the end of the day, an American flag will be created from the markers. This display will remain up throughout the weekend for the community to visit.
