Area Girl Scouts Complete MEdia Program

Fifty Cadettes participated in the six-month program to help them meet their potential.

Girl Scouts of West Central Florida will host a celebration for 50 Girl Scout Cadettes in grades six to eight who recently completed MEdia, part of the It’s Your Story – Tell It! journey from Girl Scouts of the USA  and Dove.

Over the past six months, the group of Girl Scout Cadettes from three troops in Clearwater, West Tampa and Riverview attended myriad events and completed projects at their troop meetings as part of the MEdia journey from It's Your Story—Tell It!

It's Your Story—Tell It! uses a storytelling theme in a fun and relevant way for girls to better understand themselves and their potential. Throughout the journey, girls looked for the “ME” in media and learned how they can shape media – for themselves, their communities and the world.

Three awards were achieved by the girls as part of the MEdia journey: Monitor, Influence and Cultivate.

To receive the Monitor Award, the girls took stock of the media in their world and the influences it has.

The Influence Award encouraged girls to understand the importance of having media reflect the realities of their world.

Finally, for the Cultivate Award, the girls made personal commitments to cultivate a new perspective on the media.

Juliana Manero, program collaborations specialist with GSWCF, partnered with local businesses and organizations to help lead the girls through the MEdia journey, including ABC Action News; Clinique; Frameworks; the Museum of Science & Industry; Powerstories; WMNF; WUSF and the Healthy State Collaborative; and event planner Lovelynn Jensen.

The culmination of the girls’ journey will be held Saturday, May 14, when the 50 Girl Scout Cadettes who participated in the MEdia journey share their experiences with approximately 150 other Girl Scouts and adult members.

It’s Your Story – Tell It! is the final installment in a series of three journeys developed by GSUSA as part of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Each level of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience takes girls on a journey – a voyage to someplace new, with adventures and discoveries along the way.

These adventures strengthen a girl’s ability to discover herself and her values, connect with others locally and globally and take action to make the world a better place.

The other two journeys in the series are It’s Your World – Change It! and It’s Your Planet – Love It! Each journey features a collection of six age-appropriate publications, or leadership journeys, that have been developed for girls in grades kindergarten through 12, and are accompanied by corresponding adult guides. These resources center on different themes at each Girl Scout grade-level and encourage girls to take the lead in planning their leadership activities and projects.
