Popular Local Children's Store Closing Soon

The children's boutique recently moved into a new location, but the owner says medical issues are forcing her to close the doors.

Tammy Hicks, owner of Gumballs & Overalls children's boutique moved her shop about one block last year to a larger space with more visibility at 3239 Lithia-Pinecrest Rd., Valrico. Recently, she announced another move for the shop, a move to close the doors.

Hicks first mentioned the closing on the store's Facebook page on April 12.

"Due to medical issues, I have decided to close my Gumballs and Overalls Valrico location at the end of May," she wrote.

The store supports more than 140 local vendors who create everything from tutus and fairy wings to crocheted hats and monogrammed T-shirts.

Hicks, who relocated to the area from Michigan, brought many of the items with her from the original Gumballs and Overalls store she opened there in 2009.

Hicks' medical issues make it difficult for her to be at the store and on her feet all day. She says her doctors convinced her it was time to focus more on her recovery.

"After a year of issues with pain to my leg, my neurologist strongly advised that I put my health first," she said.

Patrons hoping to still be able to find the unique children's items from the store won't have to look far. The online store, run through a Facebook page will remain open.

"I can still have any of the items from the store made and delivered," Hicks said.

Until the store closes, many items are for sale at deep discounts. All of the furniture and cabinetry in the store is also for sale.

To all of her patrons and friends who have been to the store since she opened the original Valrico location in 2011, Hicks has a message.

"Thanks for all of the support and commitment over these years." She added that her loyal customers have been a blessing.
