In celebration of National Volunteer Week, Hillsborough County Animal Services invites pet lovers to help make adifference in the lives of homeless and needy shelter animals. On Saturday, April 21 at 10 a.m., a volunteer orientation will be held at the county shelter at 440 N. Falkenburg Rd. in Tampa.

The orientation is geared for adults only (18 years of age and up), and all volunteers must attend an orientation to serve at the shelter.

Typical volunteer duties include washing, grooming and socializing pets, digital photography, laundry and clerical assistance. Drivers with flexible schedules are also needed to help transport animals.

Volunteers can even help rehabilitate animal cruelty victims. As Hillsborough County Animal Services is responsible for the investigation and prosecution of animal neglect in the county, help is needed to provide exercise and enrichment for these special needs pets sheltered in its custody. No formal experience is necessary, and volunteers will receive further training.

Additionally, the shelter is always in need of transition-foster volunteers to provide satellite homes for animals undergoing medical care as they await adoption. Animal Services works to match up the needs of individual pets to appropriate transition-foster homes, and medical care is provided when needed.

Since 2007, unpaid citizen volunteers have given nearly 240,000 hours to Hillsborough County Animal Services. As part of a successful outreach program, volunteerism and increased adoptions have combined with enforcement and spay/neuter efforts to drastically lower impounds and save lives. Hillsborough County Animal Services is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday with hours of operation listed online at www.hillsboroughcounty.org/animalservices.

For more information or to reserve a spot at a volunteer orientation, call Hillsborough County Animal Services at 813-744-5660 or email HCASinfo@hillsboroughcounty.org.
