Trashing The Trash Can, 'Awful Waste' Or Other Uses?

Automated garbage collection is coming soon. What do you plan to do with your old trash cans and recycling bins?

With reminders posted at street corners, news is spreading that in September, Hillsborough County solid waste customers will get a new residential garbage and recycling collection service that includes sturdy roll carts to transport trash to the curb.

Starting Aug. 1, gray roll carts for garbage and blue roll carts for recycling will be delivered to more than 260,000 homes, which begs the question: What do you do with the old trash cans?

That's been a topic of conversation drawing great interest on the FishHawk Area Neighborhood Page, where suggestions — both serious and in jest — range from selling them on Craig's list, using them for yard waste, using them to store large Christmas decorations and painting them red for beer pong, or water pong. Said one resident, who called the trashing of current garbage cans and bins an "awful waste" — "Maybe I can sell mine to someone in Polk County."

What to do with your old trash cans and recycling bins? County officials asked and answered that question online (see Roll Carts And New Collection FAQs):

"Customer-provided garbage cans may be used for yard waste or for other uses such as storing broom and rakes in your garage. If you cannot find an alternate use for the garbage cans, the franchise collectors will pick up the cans and recycling bins at curbside at a later date to be announced."

What are your planned uses for old garbage cans and recycling bins? Recyclable art? Storage? Yard Waste? Can't wait for county officials to pick them up? Let us know in the comment box below.
