Residents Urged to Register for Special Needs Shelters

There are three designated special needs shelters in Hillsborough County including The Regent in Riverview.

News Report

June 1 marked the beginning of the Atlantic hurricane season. While all Florida residents need to be prepared for hurricane season, for residents with certain medical conditions there is a need for additional planning.

These residents are urged to register now if they are planning to use one of three county special needs shelters during an evacuation.

Individuals whose medical condition may require the use of electrical equipment, oxygen, dialysis or individuals with physical, cognitive or medical conditions that may require assistance from medical professionals may meet the special needs criteria. Preregistration is highly encouraged.

People who do wish to use the special needs shelter must bring their own medications, portable medical equipment and food if they have special dietary needs.

The special-needs registration form can be found at on the Hillsborough County Health Department's website.

To have a form mailed to you or if you have any questions concerning the Special Needs Program, call 813-307-8063.  If you need assistance with completing your form by phone, call 813-272-5900.

Information about pet sheltering is available by calling Hillsborough County Animal Services at 813-744-5660.
