Residents Invited to Tampa Bay Hurricane Expo

The expo will take place June 2 at the Museum of Science & Industry.

Hurricane season has arrived. And to help residents prepare, the City of Tampa and Hillsborough County, in partnership with the Museum of Science & Industry, 4801 E. Fowler Ave., Tampa, will host the 2012 Tampa Bay Hurricane Expo from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, MOSI.

Admission to the Tampa Bay Hurricane Expo is free, and will include access to MOSI’s Astronaut Training Adventure. In addition, Tampa Bay Hurricane Expo guests can enjoy MOSI exhibit galleries and one standard IMAX Dome Theatre film for $8 per person (children unde r2 admitted free). Special-engagement films and exhibits, including Mummies of the World, are not included.

At the expo, residents will be able to look up their evacuation zone and learn more about making a disaster plan to help them quickly and easily respond to an emergency. The expo will feature a variety of disaster preparedness vendors, children’s activities such as balloon artists and face painters, emergency vehicles from Hillsborough County and Tampa Fire Rescue, giveaways (while supplies last) and a chance to win an IPad 2.

Tampa Bay Hurricane Expo attendees also will be able to attend question-and-answer weather panels, held at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., to hear from meteorologists representing local news stations and the National Weather Service.

BJ’s Wholesale Club will have a display showing the quantity of supplies needed by a family of four to be self sufficient for at least 72 hours following a disaster. Tampa Fire Rescue’s Urban Search & Rescue canine team also will be present to show their dogs and talk about their work.

A new feature this year, the expo will be powered by a large solar power generator, which is being supplied by Solar Solutions Inc.
