Red Light Camera Fines, Loud Car Stereos on County’s Radar

Hillsborough County Commissioners plan to take up proposed changes to existing laws during their June 5 meeting. What do you think about the issues?

Running a red light while blaring a radio so loud residents two blocks away can hear it might result in a double whammy from law enforcement if two proposed changes to the law are taken up by Hillsborough County Commissioners this week.

Commissioners are being asked to consider two possible ordinance changes during their June 5 meeting that will alter the way red-light and loud stereo cases are handled in the county.

The first change involves the way in which red-light camera runners are allowed to appeal.

State Legislators earlier this year agreed to expand the appeals process for red-light runners caught on camera, making it feasible for local governments like the county to establish their own process. That means red-light runners in Hillsborough County could appeal to a board within Hillsborough to have the fine overturned. It also means fines for those who fail to win their appeals could add up to about $408.

The county’s proposed ordinance would place the appeals in its existing code enforcement process.

If commissioners agree to move forward with the ordinance change Wednesday, a public hearing will be held on June 19 at 2 p.m., according to the county’s agenda.

Crackdown on Loud Stereos Coming?

As local governments throughout the Tampa Bay area take up the charge against loud stereos, County Commissioner Victor Crist doesn’t want to see Hillsborough left behind. He intends to ask fellow commissioners and county staff to consider some changes to the county’s existing noise ordinance, according to the June 5 agenda.

Details of the request are not clear, but Crist is requesting the ordinance be strengthened.

Wednesday’s meeting begins at 9 a.m. at County Center, 601 E. Kennedy Blvd.
