Hillsborough Republicans React to Obama's Position on Same-Sex Marriage

Hillsborough Republicans are calling President Obama's comments May 9 concerning legalizing same-sex marriage a ploy to garner votes this fall.

In a television interview May 9, Obama publicly endorsed making same-sex marriage legal.

The interview with ABC's Robin Roberts was broadcast yesterday afternoon.

“I’ve just concluded that for me, personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married,” Obama said to Roberts.

Obama's remarks prompted the Hillsborough Republican Party to issue a press release in reaction.

“We understand that everything Mr. Obama is doing at this point, including his speeches, appearances and endorsements, is a part of a calculated and timed strategy to enhance his re-election campaign.” said Art Wood, chairman of the Hillsborough Republican Party.

“We think the issues of rising gas prices, a sluggish housing system and down-economy are all issues affecting Americans deeply and are being distracted with a strategic endorsement” continued Wood. “Furthermore, we feel the issue is a state-by-state issue, rather than contributing further to growing federal government control.”

The Hillsborough County Republican Party is urging Republicans to respond by getting involved and supporting Republican election campaigns.

“We need Tampa Bay residents to be proactive and support the issues that are affecting each and every one of us.” said Wood. “We invite Tampa’s residents to be a part of one of the largest Republican teams in Florida and join us in bringing fundamental changes to government to build a brighter future.”

The Hillsborough County Republican Party’s Executive Committee’s monthly meeting is at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, at The River of Tampa Bay Education Center, 3738 River International Drive in Tampa.
