Noisy Car Stereos to be Tackled by Commission

The commission will consider an ordinance today to put a lid on raucous music.

Today, Hillsborough County commissioners will consider lowering the hammer on drivers who blast their car stereos.

The commission will debate passing an anti-noise ordinance following complaints by residents that the booming bass from car stereos represents a nuisance.

Last year, the sheriff's office got 6,079 complaints about excessive noise.

Unfortunately, there was nothing the sheriff's office could do about the complaints.

In 2009, State Attorney Mark Ober stopped enforcing the county's noise ordinance following a court decision that ruled the ordinance unconstitutional.

At today's county commission meeting, the county attorney will present a revised ordinance based on successful ordinances enacted in other counties and upheld by the court.
