County to Celebrate Older Americans Month

Hillsborough County will honor senior citizens in May.

May is Older Americans Month, and Hillsborough County’s Department of Family and Aging Services will join the rest of the nation in celebrating and honoring our older adults. This year’s theme is Older Americans: Connecting the Community.

Older adults are the roots from which our community grows. They bestow gifts of wisdom and insight upon younger generations, and they strengthen the bonds between neighbors to create a better place to live. Our society can be enhanced by older adults aging peacefully in their communities.

Hillsborough County Aging Services has planned a variety of activities to celebrate the remarkable achievements and strength of Older Americans this May:

Friday, May 13, 2 p.m., is the 37th Annual Senior Volunteer Recognition Luncheon at the Double Tree Hotel Tampa Westshore, 4500 W. Cypress St. in Tampa

This year's theme is Volunteer Rocks. The Retired Senior Volunteer Program  and sponsors recognize nearly 600 senior volunteers who provide services through RSVP to 75 nonprofit agencies throughout Hillsborough County, including six Hillsborough County departments, as well as the Hillsborough County Public Schools, and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Friday, May 20, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. is the Seniors’ Prom at the Brandon Recreation Center, 502 E. Sadie St. in Brandon.

This year’s Seniors’ Prom theme, A Night in Venice, will take seniors to Italy as the jazz band from Durant High School serenades them throughout the day. The Seniors' Prom will have a crowning of king and queen, dancing, food, games and music.

Wednesday, May 25, is National Senior Health and Fitness Day.

Hillsborough County Aging Services will host various exercise and nutrition education activities at each of the eight Senior Centers.
