Bloomingdale Welcomes New Taxing District Board Members

With the resignation of Thom Snelling after 17 years on the Bloomingdale Special Taxing District Board, the board announced this month that longtime Bloomingdale East resident Dave West was unanimously elected president of the district's board of trustees.

Snelling, the former president, is moving out of the district and is no longer eligible to serve on the board.

West, who had been the former vice president of the board, will serve the remainder of Snelling's two-year term.

West is a former member of the Bloomingdale Homeowners Association board and an active member of the Brandon Rotary Club.

Board trustee Joe Liguori was elected to serve as vice president of the board.

The board also appointed residents Deborah Duncan, Mark Vargo and Jereme Monette to serve on the board.

Formed by county ordinance in 1985, the Bloomingale Special Taxing District is charged with maintaining the community's common areas including the subdivision entranceways and the areas stretching from the edge of the roads to the walls of the neighborhoods. This includes landscaping, mowing, lighting, removing litter and holiday decorations.

The trustees are elected officials who serve four-year terms. Anyone who lives in Bloomingdale and is a registered voter can be a candidate for trustee. 

The funds for maintaining common areas are generated through a $130 assessment fee on all 5,000 properties in Bloomingdale. The 2013 budget is $793,389.

The board meets the second Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Bloomingdale Special Taxing District office, 3509 Bell Shoals Rd., Valrico, behind SunTrust Bank. All meetings are open to the public. The next meeting will take place Feb. 11.
