A controversial antiabortion bill sponsored by Rep. Rachel Burgin, R-Riverview, has been blocked by the Florida Senate, the Tampa Bay Times reports.

The bill, which had been , would impose a 24-hour wait on abortions, require new abortion clinics be owned by physicians and add other provisions.

A bipartisan coalition prevented the Senate version of the bill, SB 290, from being heard on the Senate floor Monday, the Times reports.

"The public is calling and screaming, pleading with us to concentrate on bills that give us jobs, put food on our table and lower our cost of living," Sen. Evelyn Lynn, R-Ormond Beach, told the Times. Lynn was one of six Republicans to join with Democrats who stopped the bill from being heard.
