Hillsborough County Animal Services will combine Halloween fun with pet adoptions during its "Cats, Bats & Bones" bash Saturday, Oct. 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the county shelter at 440 N. Falkenburg Rd. in Tampa.
Children are invited to participate in a costume parade, enter the "meow off" contest and decorate the shelter with artwork from the creative coloring station.
In addition, the event will feature an appearance by Bat Belfrys Inc. of Merritt Island. The nonprofit organization is making a special stop in Hillsborough County as part of its mission to debunk misconceptions and promote conservation of Florida's beneficial bats. "Bat Chats" begin at 1:30 p.m. with a biologist on hand to answer questions, show the animals and demonstrate why bat houses make great neighbors.
Animal lovers are invited to bring and distribute store-bought pet treats to lost and homeless shelter residents. For safety reasons, homemade goodies are not permitted. Pets should remain at home during this event.
And those seeking a pet have a special incentive for adopting this month.
October is national Adopt-a-Dog Month, and all dogs in the shelter weighting 30 pounds or more can be adopted for $30. Additional specials will be offered during the Cats, Bats & Bones bash. Adoptions include spaying/neutering, vaccination, county registration tag and micro-chip. Prospective adopters should bring a valid photo ID and proof of address to Animal Services.
