Lockdown Lifted at Newsome High School

Campus had been placed on lockdown Wednesday morning because of weapons threat.

A lockdown at has been lifted, school officials said Wednesday morning, after investigators concluded the campus is safe following a weapons threat.

A Hillsborough County Public Schools news release said they had received word that someone was going to bring a weapon on campus. Authorities learned of a vague threat in an online chat room Tuesday night, TBO.com reported.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and school security officials said they have been working to assess the threat and search the campus and concluded it is safe.

Schools spokesperson Linda Cobbe told TBO.com that sheriff's deputies and school security officers met students coming to school Wednesday morning and began the search. A letter is being sent to parents explaining the situation.

The school resumed a normal class schedule, according to a news release sent at 9:40 a.m.

"Although it is inconvenient, we take these matters seriously because safety is
our top priority," the release stated.
