Spring Hills Lake Mary residents plant Fruit Trees to Celebrate TuB'Shevat

A new banana tree and a lime tree will enhance the bounty of fresh produce enjoyed year ‘round by all of the senior residents of Spring Hills Lake Mary Assisted Living and were planted in their courtyard on Thursday January 16, 2014 in conjunction with the Jewish annual celebration of TuB’Shevat, observed as the “Jewish New Year for Trees.”

Jewish residents of the community broke ground to add these two fruit trees to the kitchen garden already established in the community. The traditions and ceremonies were coordinated with the assistance of Emily Newman of the Jewish Pavilion, a senior services mission for Jewish elders in central Florida. This year’s trees join the avocado and lemon trees planted during the community’s TuB’Shevat celebration in 2013.

“At Spring Hills Lake Mary, we are dedicated to recognizing the holidays, holy days and honored traditions of all of our residents and sharing their stories with everyone here,” explained Robin Wolfe, Director of Recreational Services. “TuB’Shevat celebrates ecology and environmentalism and that’s a beautiful message that everyone can easily appreciate and enjoy. It also goes along perfectly with another key thing we value in all of the Spring Hills senior communities. We’re dedicated to maintaining kitchen gardens and incorporating as much in-house produce and fresh herbs into our residents’ healthy meals as possible.”

The Spring Hills Lake Mary community, which enjoys the spectacular growing climate of central Florida, utilizes the fruit trees planted during their annual TuB’Shevat ceremonies as part of a compact, yet ambitious garden, which also employs three unusual vertical hydroponic towers which grow a variety of produce used in community meal preparation. “As the years go on, and we pick from the trees we plant during TuB’Shevat, each piece of fruit is much more significant than grabbing something fresh to eat from the local grocery store,” added Wolfe.” We will always know where we were when we planted the trees and recall the meaningful traditions we experience together each January, courtesy of Emily Newman and the wonderful people at The Jewish Pavilion. It makes enjoying these tasty and healthy fruits that much more special.”
