Improving Your Home Energy and Reducing Your Costs

Winters in Florida may be mild, but it is still an excellent time to think about home repairs and/or remodeling.

Depending upon the age of your home, it may not have been built as energy efficient as homes have been built up north to withstand the ice and snow and hurricanes and weather changes in Florida.. Now is the time we can look into ways that we can cut down expenses and reduce our usage of energy.

If the budget does not permit replacing windows with newer energy efficient windows, you can still reduce expenses by sealing them. Sealing around open areas that allow drafts to come will cut your heating expenses and save energy.

Insulating your home is a great way to cut down on your energy costs. Do some research on line or ask in your home improvement store what would be the best grade of insulation for the areas you are looking at and where you live. If your budget permits, research a professional company who will spray foam insulation in your walls and attic areas. This not only is energy efficient, it cuts down on outside noise, it gives added weather protection and provides you and your family with better air quality.

Fall is a good time to replace your filters if you have a forced air heating unit. New filters not only reduce your costs, they will provide you with a healthier air quality.
Now that hurricane season is behind us, it is a great time to check out your roofing for needed repairs. It is best to have an inspection by a professional if your roof is old and in possible need of replacing.

Also, the rainy season is over so it is time to check out your gutters. Most likely they have collected leaves and debris over the summer months and that needs to be cleared to prevent the water from running off and sitting around the foundation of your home. Check to ensure no repairs or replacements of your gutters are needed.

Many homes in Florida contain fire places. Prior to the cool down of winter and lighting a fire, have a professional chimney sweep come in to clean it out and check for possible problems that can cause fire.

You should check with an insurance agency to see if any of the repairs and replacements that you have completed be subject to a discount on your property insurance.
