Viewfinder: Alafia Lighted Boat Parade and Chili Cook-Off

Hundreds of residents converged at the International Independent Showmen's Association in Gibsonton for a chance to see some decorated boats, taste chili and share in some festive entertainment.

It was smooth sailing Saturday, Dec. 3, when the Rotary Club of FishHawk/Riverview hosted its 28th annual Alafia Lighted Boat Parade and Chili Cook-Off at the International Independent Showmen's Association, 6915 Riverview Dr., Riverview.

Only four boats vied for the prize money this year but the event's hundreds of spectators weren't disappointed. In between watching the decorated boats parade up and down the Alafia River, residents enjoyed a taste of chili and other food, visits with Santa, a silent auction and 50/50 raffle, face painting and music provided by the Riverview High School Chorus.

After spending two days decking out their pontoon boat with Christmas decorations, Lisa and Trey Ford of Riverview took first-place honors in the boat parade. Anna Smith of Gibsonton came in second, Zachary Dixon of Riverview was third and Scott and Diana Shannon of Brandon came in fourth.
