South Shore Symphony Orchestra to Present 'Images of Fright'

The orchestra will perform Oct. 28 at 2 p.m. at The Regent.

Just in time for Halloween, the South Shore Symphony Orchestra will present a spooky lineup of classical music when it performs at The Regent, 6437 Watson Rd., Riverview, Oct. 28 at 2 p.m.

It its second concert of the winter season, the nonprofit orchestra based in Sun City Center will offer concert-goers a symphonic array of ghosts, goblins, dancing skeletons, murderous trolls, wild witches and other nightmarish creations in a program titled “Images of Fright.”

Conducted by Dr. Susan Bailey Robinson, the program includes Charles Gounod’s, "Funeral March of a Marionette," which Alfred Hitchcock liked well enough to borrow for his TV theme music.

"Masquerade Suite" by Khachaturian pulsates with the madness of the waltz, a dance once banned in England for being decadent, even demonic.

"Danse Macabre" from the pen of Saint-Saens puts the listener in mind of dancing skeletons.

And Mussorgsky’s "Night on Bald Mountain" is a witches' brew from Hades’ fiery depths.

Formed in 2009, the orchestra features 47 musicians on flute, violin, oboe, clarinet, viola, bassoon, cello, French horn, bass, trumpet, trombone, tuba and percussion. Its mission is to bring quality classical music to area residents.

Tickets for Sunday's concert are $10.
