annual Neighborhood Pit Bull Day on March 1, 2014.

The event will provide 500 free rabies vaccinations and pet registration tags, and 250 free micro-chips, for pit bulls and pit mixes. Owners must be Hillsborough County residents; bring a driver’s license or other form of I.D. with proof of address. Dogs must be on leashes (no retractable leashes); no other animals, please.

Hillsborough County’s Animal Ordinance requires all dogs, cats, and ferrets four months of age or older to be vaccinated against the rabies virus and issued an official County pet registration tag. All dogs must wear the tag when outside. Unlike a simple tag from a retail store, a pet’s official County registration tag lets others know that the animal has been safely vaccinated against rabies. In addition, both the County tag and a micro-chip provide important information that can help a lost pet be returned home.

Veterinarians and staff from member animal hospitals in the Hillsborough Animal Health Foundation will be on hand at Neighborhood Pit Bull Day to vaccinate and micro-chip the dogs, with assistance from volunteers from local groups that rescue pit bull breeds.

The Hillsborough Animal Health Foundation was founded in 1987 by a community-minded group of Hillsborough County veterinarians to foster the human/animal bond and promote responsible pet ownership, improved pet health and pet care through an emphasis on pet owner education. The foundation is comprised of 41 local professional veterinary hospitals.
