Today is the Shortest Day of the Year

Friday, Dec. 21, is the first day of winter in the Northern Hemisphere.

The good news is the Earth wasn't destroyed today as predicted by doomsday preppers in response to the Mayan calendar ending on Dec. 21, 2012.

The bad news is sun lovers won't enjoy as much daylight today.

The sun's path will reach its southern most high noon position in the sky, directly over the Tropic of Capricorn, according to An Almanac Minute: The Winter Solstice

Keep in mind, that winter does intend to make its presence known today, too. Temperatures are expected to dip this evening to near-freezing in the Bloomingdale-Riverview area.
