Riverview Graduate, College Student Dies at Church Camp

The death of a popular counselor from Bell Shoals Baptist was reported on the church's Website June 27.

A college student working as a camp counselor at a Bell Shoals Baptist Church summer camp in Alachu County was found dead June 27.

“This afternoon, Jacob Fowler, one of our college students who was serving as a camp counselor, was found unconscious in the water after snorkeling with friends during free time at camp,” said senior pastor Stephen Rummage and Victor Flores, pastor of student ministry, in a statement on the church’s Website , posted late June 27.

According to his Facebook page, Fowler, 23, was married, graduated from Riverview High School in 2006 and was a pre-med student at the University of South Florida.

“All efforts were made by medical personnel to revive Jacob, including life flight to the hospital. However, Jacob did not survive this accident. Jacob Fowler went home to be with Jesus earlier tonight. We ask that you pray for the Fowler family including Jacob's precious wife Diana, his parents Bill and Patty Fowler, and family,” said the statement.

The church is currently running two summer camps at site; one for seventh and eight graders and a separate camp for high school students. Both camps run June 27 to July 1.

The church is in the process of planning a memorial service.

The Bell Shoals Baptist statement said ministerial staff are on hand at Camp Kulaqua to provide crisis counseling for any students who need it but “our plans are to continue with camp.”
