Jury Selection Under Way in Twin Lakes Shooting Trial

Jury selection continues today in the trial of a former school bus driver accused of shooting and killing a Valrico father.

Trevor Dooley, 71, is claiming self defense in the shooting death of Twin Lakes subdivision neighbor David James, 41, in September 2010, over a dispute about a skateboarder using a basketball court in the subdivision.

According to a Tampa Bay Times report, six jurors and two alternates were chosen yesterday. Another 24 prospective jurors were dismissed because they said they'd heard about the high-profile case. Attorneys expect to choose the remainder of the jury today.

Following the shooting death, Dooley's attorney, Ronald Tulin, attempted to convince Hillsborough County Circuit Judge Ashley Moody that Dooley deserved immunity under Florida's "stand your ground" law. Dooley testified that he fired his gun because James was choking him and trying to pull the gun out of his hand. He said he feared for his life.

James and his 8-year-old daughter, Danielle, were at a park in Twin Lakes playing basketball when Dooley, who lived across the street from the park, reportedly began yelling at a 14-year-old teen who was skateboarding on the basketball court.

James began arguing with Dooley. Witnesses said Dooley then pulled a gun from his pants. They said James was shot while trying to wrestle the gun away from Dooley.
