Motorists are being asked to be more alert of their surroundings as they adjust to their early morning routines after moving their clocks forward one hour Sunday to accomodate for Daylight Saving Time.

"Being aware of the adjustment in outside lighting situations can help make us all be more alert of our surroundings to help avoid any unfortunate incidents," comes word from the Winter Haven Police Department.

"Pedestrians, bicyclists and runners will still be present, though drivers may not be accustomed to seeing them in the early morning low light," notes a report on useful tips for making the adjustment.

In that regard, pedestrians, bicyclists and runners "must be aware of their clothing, making sure they are visible in the lowered light," reads the report. "Bicyclists should be certain there are lights installed on the front
and back along with reflectors that allow the bicycle to be seen at all angles."

Additional tips are noted:

  • "Children waiting at school bus stops could be waiting in much lower lighting conditions, so drivers should be extra cautious. Additionally, parents should be sure their students realize the obstacles that drivers will be encountering with the lower lighting and be certain to stay off the roadway. Adding reflective tape to backpacks and wearing light-colored clothing will help the children be seen easier."
  • "With the change, distracted drivers and pedestrians can present increased hazards, especially those on the phone. Under no circumstance should a driver text while driving. Such careless behavior can result in a serious crash, whether with a vehicle or involving a pedestrian or cyclist who enters into the roadway."
