Commissioners To Consider Redistricting Proposals (UPDATED WITH VOTE)

A public hearing and subsequent vote is expected tonight at the County Center in downtown Tampa on redistricting proposals.

UPDATED — Hillsborough County Commissioners voted June 20 to split the Greater Brandon area at State Road 60. The Greater Brandon area north of State Road 60 — including Dover, Mango, and parts of Valrico — is moved to District 2, under the new electoral boundaries for county commission seats. Those areas currently are in District 4.

The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners is expected to vote tonight, June 20, on redistricting proposals for electoral boundaries.

A public hearing is set to take place before the vote, kicking off at 6 p.m.

Long-time civic activist Lisa Rodriguez, in a Brandon Patch preview article, said she is concerned proposals to split the Greater Brandon area, including Bloomingdale, into several districts could hurt a unified approach to future development.

Commissioner Al Higginbotham said he sees merits to "both sides of the issue" and that he looks forward to what he expected to be an in-depth discussion on th issue, before the vote.
