5 Things to Know Today, May 9

1. Be ready for another hot day. It's a pleasant 65 degrees right now but is expected to reach 90 degrees this afternoon.

2. If you have to fill up, be prepared to pay more at the pump today. The average price of gas for regular unleaded in the Bloomingdale area is $3.99 a gallon.

3. Richard Strehl, executive director of the Greater Brandon Community Foundation, will be Cooking for a Cause at the Copper Bell Cafe, 401 S. Parsons Ave., Brandon, May 9 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to raise funds for the foundation. For information, call 813-688-3354.

4. The puppet show, "Ashpet," will be presented at the Riverview Branch Library, 10509 Riverview Drive, Riverview, May 9 at 3:30 p.m. In this Appalachian version of Cinderella, Ashpet lives in a log cabin in the hills and depends on the kindness of the old witch woman in the hollow to transform her from rags to riches. After meeting the prince at their church social, a little square dancing and lots of trying on shoes, they all live happily ever after.
 
Presented by Creative Arts Theatre of the City of Tampa Parks and Recreation Department, this show is appropriate for ages 3 and up.

5. South Shore Sound is always looking for enthusiastic new members and guests. It welcomes visitors to our Monday evening rehearsals. Both singers and non-singers may come to enjoy the harmony of the  rehearsals as members learn and fine-tune music and choreography.

Singers are encouraged to borrow a copy of the current repertoire for the evening, come up on the risers, and sing along to really experience being "in" the chorus. Chorus rehearsals are held Monday evenings from 7 to 9:30 p.m. (Guest check-in and voice placement starts at 6:30) at Bell Shoals Church of Christ in Brandon.
