The Costs of Spine Treatment

Cost of spine treatment reaching towards 90 billion dollars per year.

Did you know that the cost of treating back pain has risen nearly 65% in the past decade?  In the United States we are spending nearly as much money treating the spine as we are spending for the treatment of cancer (nearly 90 Billion dollars per year).

With this amount of spending it would be fair to assume that we are making great headway in the treatment.  Unfortunately, studies show that nearly 8/10 people will experience debilitating back pain at some point in their life, with nearly 15% of the population being afflicted with chronic back pain daily.  Studies also show that costs related to spine care will to continue to grow throughout the next decade and beyond.

One of the best and most cost effective ways to decrease this cost is prevention.  Back pain prevention can come in many forms such as exercise, core stability, proper diet, and a positive outlook.  There are many fantastic sources of information on this topic available on the internet.  Below you will find a link to the Mayo Clinic recommendations for back pain prevention. Additionally, never hesitate to consult with your primary care doctor or your Florida Orthopaedic Institute physician regarding back pain prevention.  Education regarding prevention is a cornerstone of my practice at FOI.
