Bright Pink is "the only national non-profit organization focusing on the prevention and early detection of breast and ovarian cancer in young women while providing support for high-risk individuals."

The organization was founded by Lindsay Avner, who at age 23 reportedly "became the youngest patient in the country to bravely opt for a risk-reducing double mastectomy with reconstruction."

She had lost both her grandmother and great-grandmother to breast cancer before she was born and watched her mother fight both breast and ovarian cancer. At age 12, Avner underwent genetic testing, which revealed she carried the BRCA 1 gene, and thus had "up to an 87 percent lifetime risk of developing breast cancer and up to a 54 percent chance of developing ovarian cancer."

As noted, "Vowing to not let breast cancer strike her as it had three generations of women before her," Avner "chose to act by taking proactive measures with her breast health."

Bright Pink, the organization she founded, is to help ensure that other young women have a "warm, welcoming community" available to provide "the education and support that [Avner] had longed for" while going through her period of risk assessment and risk-reducing surgery.
