Westfield Brandon's 'Bright Pink Book' Of Deals

Help young women with breast and ovarian cancer and cancer risks with a "Bright Pink Book" purchase at Westfield Brandon mall.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Help fight cancer with a "Bright Pink Book" purchase at Westfield Brandon mall.

Inside the The Bright Pink Book are special offers from Westfield Brandon retailers "that can help you save hundreds whiles you are shopping," according to a Westfield promotional announcement.

"We are talking about a lot of exciting trends for fall over here, but you know which trend is truly our favorite? Giving back to others," the notice reads. "With just a $5 donation (the price of that delicious spiced morning coffee), we can help women across the nation with Bright Pink."

Offers in the "little book" with "fashion deals for a fabulous cause" include "free valet" and offers from H&MJ. CrewAnn Taylor and Michael Kors. (Deals vary by Westfield center.)

Bright Pink is "the only national non-profit organization focusing on the prevention and early detection of breast and ovarian cancer in young women while providing support for high-risk individuals."

The organization was founded by Lindsay Avner, who at age 23 reportedly "became the youngest patient in the country to bravely opt for a risk-reducing double mastectomy with reconstruction."

She had lost both her grandmother and great-grandmother to breast cancer before she was born and watched her mother fight both breast and ovarian cancer. At age 12, Avner underwent genetic testing, which revealed she carried the BRCA 1 gene, and thus had "up to an 87 percent lifetime risk of developing breast cancer and up to a 54 percent chance of developing ovarian cancer."

As noted, "Vowing to not let breast cancer strike her as it had three generations of women before her," Avner "chose to act by taking proactive measures with her breast health."

Bright Pink, the organization she founded, is to help ensure that other young women have a "warm, welcoming community" available to provide "the education and support that [Avner] had longed for" while going through her period of risk assessment and risk-reducing surgery.
