Riverview Woman has Her Cake Pops, And Sells Them, Too

Ruth Foss bakes cake pops and cupcakes for any occasion.

She'd been laid off from jobs several times bofore. But when Ruth Foss of Riverview was laid off from her last job at an accountant's office in January, it was the last straw.

After years of considering going into business on her own, Foss took the plunge and started SouthShore Sweets, a custom cake pop and cupcake business.

"I've always loved to bake," said Foss. "I used to make wedding and birthday cakes for friends and family. So, after being laid off in January, I decided to go for it and become my own boss."

Shortly after, the native Floridian launched her baking business, offering creative custom cake pops as well mini and full-size cupcakes for every occasion.

Cake pops are two- to three-bite-size cake balls on a stick covered with a candy coating. You can order them in a variety of colors to match any theme, fundraiser, party or event.

There's a cake pop made to look like an apple for Teacher Appreciation Week; a cake pop disguised as a chick for Easter; and cake pops made with school colors for graduations and other school events.

Foss' cupcakes come in regular and mini sizes and can be personalized with picks and wrappers for any occasion.

Her cake pops sell for $2 each or six for $11. Her cupcakes also sell for $11.

"The more you buy, the cheaper the cost," said Foss, adding, "I'm willing to do fundraisers for schools and other organizations."

So far, she's relishing her newfound status as a small business owner.

"I enjoy doing this," said Foss. "I like to be able to do my own thing and not be at the mercy of the corporate world."
