Original Leena's Chocolates Closes

Leena and Anthony Caligiure have closed their chocolate shop after five years in business.

After five years of satisfying the community's cravings for chocolate, Anthony and Leena Caligiure have closed the doors of The Original Leena's Chocolates.

The FishHawk Ranch couple, who relocated to the area with their three children in 2004 from New York City, first opened their specialty chocolate store in 2008, working out of a gourmet kitchen inside Famous Tate's appliance store in Valrico. A year later, they moved to 3476 Lithia-Pinecrest Rd., Valrico and then relocated to Plaza Bella on Bloomingdale Avenue in October 2011.

During their five years in the community, the Caligiures became well-known for their service to the community, whether it was donating a basket of chocolates for a fundraiser or hosting an event to benefit a local charity.

"We are deeply saddened that it has come to this after the years we spent as family, as small business owners and as proud members of this incredible community," said the Caligiures on the Original Leena's Chocolates Facebook page. "We love and thank our customers, friends and families. We have enjoyed the years of getting to know our community with our concerts, birthday/dipping parties and the numerous charitable events."

In a phone interview, Anthony Caligiure said it was a difficult decision for the family but said certain circumstances forced their hand. He did not elaborate on those circumstances.
