Fred's Southern Kitchen Coming to Riverview

The new restaurant will be open some time this summer.

Folks with a hankering for some home-style cooking won't have much longer to wait.

Fred's Southern Kitchen in Riverview is due to open soon.

Well-known Plant City restaurateur Fred Johnson will open his fifth Fred's Southern Kitchen location at 6501 U.S. 301 S., Riverview, ths summer. Johnson is renovating the former Fubar's building at U.S. 301 and Krycul.

When renovations are completed, the 5,000-square-foot restaurant will offer a buffet and full menu of Southern foods, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week.

Johnson currently has restaurants in Plant City, Lakeland, Winter Haven and Bartow. He also owns Johnson Barbecue in Plant City and Southern Gourmet Catering in Lakeland.

Johnson plans to hire 80 employees for his new Riverview restaurant.

The restaurant was founded in Plant City in 1954 by Elton and Evelyn Johnson. They started out with a gas station and sold sandwiches on the side, eventually opening Johnson's Restaurant.

The Johnson name became known throughout the area for fine Southern cooking, slow-smoked barbecue and Southern hospitality.

Menu favorites include chicken and dumplings, meatloaf, country-fried steak, barbecue pulled pork, catfish fillets and pot roast served with sides of collards or turnip greens, black-eyed peas, corn pudding, okra and tomatoes and cornbread stuffing.

The restaurant offers an early-bird special Monday through Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and kids eat for $1.99 on Tuesdays.

Hours are Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For residents who'd like a preview of Fred's offerings, the restaurant will have menu samples available at the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce monthly meeting luncheon June 26 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The chamber is hosting a "Taste of Riverview" featuring foods from 18 member restaurants, at The Regent, 6437 Watson Rd., Riverview. The cost is $10 for chamber members and $15 for nonmembers.
