Food Trucks to Roll into Riverview Saturday

The Greater Brandon Food Truck Rally will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Residents will be able to sample everything from duck tacos to mac and cheese sandwiches when the Greater Brandon Food Truck Rally comes to Riverview on Saturday.

Taking place around the Winthrop Town Centre Pole Barn, 11349 Bloomingdale Ave., east of Providence Road, the food truck rally will feature a fleet of trucks bearing taste temptations for prices ranging from $2 to $8, according to Todd Sturtz, Tasting Tampa food blogger, who has helped organize similar truck rallies around Tampa Bay.

Sturtz said Saturday’s rally will feature about 20 trucks and trailers offering a variety of tasty fare from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“We do this for two reasons. One is to bring a great variety of food to the community at a family-friendly event, and the other is to help support these local small businesses, something I’ve been passionate about for a long time,” said Sturtz. "We wanted to bring heightened awareness to small businesses who are making a living selling really good food. These businesses cannot afford to build a full-scale restaurant, but they have the ability to make really great and interesting food."

Sturtz said previous food truck rallies have attracted thousands of foodies.

“We’ve had more than 5,000 people at our rallies before. We hope the turnout in Brandon is such that everyone has a great time and gets to try some gourmet food truck food, but without having lines get too long and making sure there are a good number of vendors there for the people so that the trucks can do well, too,” said Sturtz.

Sturtz said if the Greater Brandon Truck Rally is successful, he’d like to do a rally in the area on a quarterly basis. There are currently about 50 mobile food vendors in the area, he said.

Among the food trucks that will be on hand Saturday are Jimmy Meatballs, Wicked Wiches, Fire Monkey and Inky Bunz, which specializes in Asian-style pork on buns.

“The cost is low enough that people can try the gourmet food at different trucks,” Sturtz said. “If you like food and want to try something a little different, then mark your calendar for this exciting event.”

Tasting Tampa started organizing the food truck rallies back in September. Food truck rallies have taken place in downtown Tampa, St. Petersburg and Bradenton, among other places. A major rally is being planned for Feb. 4 in Ybor City and Gasparilla weekend, Jan. 28, in Tampa.
