If you are planning to include your pets in this year's Halloween celebration, Canine Cabana owners Kendall Duncan and Angie Frazier offer the following tips:

  • Candy: Chocolate is poisonous to pets. Keep all candy out of reach to prevent your four-legged children from sneaking a taste. Purchase some dog-safe treats in advance so they have plenty of goodies to enjoy.
  • Costumes: If your dog is used to being dressed up and is extremely comfortable being handled, then Halloween will be a great day. However, most dogs will only tolerate costumes (not enjoy them). Dress them up during the day and take plenty of cute photos to share, and then leave them and their costumes safe at home while out collecting your own harvest of goodies.
  • Ghouls and Goblins: Knocking on doors, ringing doorbells and "scary" visitors during trick-or-treating will change your dog's nightly routine. Since a tired dog is a more well-behaved dog, give your pet some extra activity during the day; extra walks, ball-chasing or a fun day at dog daycare.
