Busciglio Smiles Opens in FishHawk

At the grand opening, the new dental practice raised funds for the Newsome High School Band and the MOMS Club of Lithia-Bevis.

Two generations of east Hillsborough County residents, as well as the generation to come, can thank the Busciglio family for picture-perfect smiles.

Dr. John Busciglio began the family legacy in 1972 when he opened the first full-time orthodontic practice in the Brandon area.

Now, as he retires this year, his children, Drs. Derek and Dana Busciglio, are prepared to pick up where their father left off. Not only will they oversee Busciglio Smiles offices in Brandon, Wesley Chapel and Plant City but the siblings just opened a practice in FishHawk Ranch, 16321 FishHawk Blvd., Lithia.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Busciglio Smiles and the opening of the new FishHawk Ranch office, the Busciglios and their staff held a grand opening event and fundraiser last month featuring the Newsome High School Marching Band led by Christian Finch.

With the help of the MOMS Club of Lithia-Bevis, the office held a raffle for Invisalign braces, raising $2,560 for new uniforms for the band.

Derek Busciglio said the family-oriented FishHawk Ranch area is an ideal location for their new office specializing in pediatric dental care and orthodontic care.

There's no sibling rivalry between this brother and sister. In fact, they're more than willing to boast about one another's accomplishments.

“We call Dana the triple doctor," said Derek Busciglio.

After 12 years of schooling, she has a dental degree, a pediatric dental degree and an orthodontic degree.

"Presently, she is one of only five dual-certified pediatric dentists/orthodontists in our state," said Derek Busciglio.

Dana Busciglio is equally proud of her brother's role as Invisalign's Sunshine Regional Educator. Busciglio Smiles is the only “elite provider” for Invisalign in eastern Hillsborough County.

“We have remarkable results with this aesthetic option for straightening teeth," said Derek Busciglio, who, like his sister, received his degree in dentistry from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston. "When it first entered the market in 1999, my dad was one of the first practitioners to use the system. Now we are taking Invisalign to the next level in terms of treatment types and results.”

It's not just teens who are seeking the new braces.

“We also treat a lot of adults, probably 30 percent of our practice," he said.

He said the cost is comparable to traditional braces. However, the treatment time with Invisalign averages 12-15 months, as compared to the 18-24 months required for regular braces.

The Busciglios also are committed to educating children on good oral health with the help of the "tooth fairy."

Complete with wings and fairy dust, certified dental and orthodontic assistant Christine Freeman provides tooth fairy visits to schools and children's parties, presenting educational skits and handing out goody bags containing a toothbrush, toothpaste, a floss threader, toothbox, stickers and a bracelet.
