Give the gift of a home

A gift that funds a new home for an American hero just might be the best gift we give this year.

Recently I was doing some research into groups that provide homes for folks who have a need. As an architect engaged in the design and construction of custom single family homes, I wanted to find a group that is focused on just that, the single family home.  From Habitat for Humanity to Making it Right, there are a whole lot of charitable groups that are focused on creating shelter for folks in need.  But I really wanted to find a smaller, maybe local group rather than a large and well known organization.

What I came across is Building for America's Bravest.  This group, created by the Tunnels to Towers Foundation and the Gary Sinise Foundation, builds homes for disabled American servicemen and women.

This group is all about building homes that allow the disabled American heroes the chance to live a life in homes that are barrier free and that incorporate smart technologies.  These homes are designed and constructed so these men and women have a chance to live life just as anyone else does, without barriers.  From switches positioned so that lights can be easily turned on and off to dish storage that's can be easily gotten to and more, the homes built by Building for Americas Bravest are tailored to the exact needs of one of these heroes.

A feature that I like about Building for Americas Bravest is that we can keep our donations local.  We can simply select a local hero for our donation, making sure that the home that gets built gets built in our community.  Getting a home built locally can certainly help the local home building industry.

So a we'll be donating to help build a new home for Cpl. Michael Nicholson of Tampa.  You can read more about Michael here and make your own donation as well.
