Earlier Report:

What's on tap for the 2013 Winthrop Arts Festival at the Winthrop community in Riverivew? Ask Winthrop Town Artist Bryant Martinez and his focus is on three things: firefigthers, Rotarians and the makeshift "Modern Bohemian Gallery."

That underscores, however, his unbridled enthusiasm for the festival in general, now in its fifth year at the Winthrop community in Riverview, at the southwest corner of Bloomingdale Avenue and Providence Road.

"The Winthrop Arts Festival has become a tradition, showcasing the arts, education and community endeavors," he said. "I am very excited that this year we have the opportunity to showcase also three new concepts."

New to the festival this year:

  • Container Art — Using steel containers normally found on trucks Martinez is recycling those containers — 40 feet long and 8 feet wide — for use as art space for the "Modern Bohemian Gallery," which is taking shape on the south side of the Times Building at Winthrop. The modified, temporary art gallery space, he said, is under construction in collaboration with Mishou Sanchez.
  • Fire Safety Education and Firefighter Recruitment — Martinez said Hillsborough County Fire Rescue will be on hand to recruit firefighters and to provide festival attendees with fire safety and education materials. According to Martinez, the need is to attract "160 firefighters in the upcoming years." Also, that money raised at the festival will be used to provide Hillsborough Community College book scholarships for firefighter students.
  • Rotarian Water Initiative — The FishHawk Riverview Rotary Club has adopted water purification as its main drive this year. That initiative will be showcased at this year's arts festival. Martinez and Winthrop Town Co-Founder John Sullivan are members of the Rotary club.

Martinez said this year's festival again will feature a juried art show and the works of more than 50 artists. Judges are John Harding, a professor from Hillsborough Community College, and Debra Bryant, an artist from Plant City who works with the art show at the Florida Strawberry Festival.

Also on display will be the work of students from the Winthrop Charter schools for elementary and middle-school students, as well as from the Ringling College of Art and Design and the magnet school arts program at Blake High School.

Community groups and organizations will be on hand as well, including representatives from the Center Place Fine Arts & Civic Association, who will provide activities for kids.

Live music will include works from a cello player; a local instrumental jazz band; Winthop Charter students; guitarist Ian White and drummer Richard Carr and more.
