Sketch and Sip Brings Art to the Community One Brush Stroke at a Time

Local art studio teaches step-by-step painting methods, allowing people of all abilities to create beautiful works of art.

Big ideas transform into little masterpieces at Sketch and Sip, a cozy art studio, owned by artist Patty Sisco, which offers unique painting classes to the community.

Located on the south side of the Times Building in the Winthrop Plaza, Sketch and Sip is a place where friends, couples and individuals can gather to relax and create an original piece of art using a step-by-step process taught by Sisco.

Prior drawing or painting experience is not necessary. Techniques are demonstrated and individual assistance is provided throughout the class.

“So many people come in thinking that there is no way they will be able to do it and they leave very surprised and pleased,” said business partner Sonja Hudson.

According to Sisco, the classes are so appealing because a long-term commitment in not required.

“Participants can finish and take home what they created in the same night, granting them instant gratification.”

Participants are encouraged to bring their favorite beverage; wine, soda and bottled water are a few of the most popular choices.

“The classes are a great way to relieve stress,” said Sisco. “All you are thinking about is your brush strokes, not your bills. It turns into a social event that can be very therapeutic.”

Classes, which range from $30 to $40, are all-inclusive and generally last about two hours. Participants are provided all of the materials needed to create their works of art including a 16- by 20-inch gallery wrap canvas, acrylic paint, natural hair brushes and long aprons to protect clothing.

Both Sisco and Hudson, who have been friends since junior high, like to bounce ideas off of each other when creating art pieces that will be taught in class.

“We get ideas from everything,” said Sisco. “We try to appeal to different tastes and different décors so that there is something for everyone.”

In addition to painting canvases, Sketch and Sip also offers Wacky Wine Wednesdays in which participants can paint wine glasses or beer mugs for only $15.

Sketch and Sip prides itself on bringing arts into the community. Classes fill up fast and registration is required. Private classes are also available for birthday parties, bridal showers, corporate events and fundraisers.
