Patch Picks: Summer Camps

Here's some summer camps in the Bloomingdale Patch area you might want to consider.

Summer is just three months away. Unless you plan to spend the summer entertaining kids, it’s time to think about enrolling them in summer camp. There are a variety of camp offerings throughout the Bloomingdale Patch area. Here are five of them.

  1. Kids R Kids Learning Academy, located across from Lithia Springs Elementary School in Valrico and next to Stowers Elementary School in Circa FishHawk, will host Camp Extreme Discoveries. As they decipher clues, road maps and work together through cooperation and respect, kids will explore extreme environments and discover treasure. The summer camp includes full-day, half-day and Friday drop-in offerings. The kids will go swimming, play basketball, explore local parks and enjoy an on-site interactive water park. Field trips include visits to the Rainforest Café, Bucs Stadium, a Devil Rays game, the Museum of Science & Industry, the Ringling Museum, a dolphin/beach day and bowling. In-house entertainment will include Reptile Discovery, a magician, Mad Science and more. The cost per week is $130 with a coupon; $155 without.   2. Tech Playzone, 13208 Boyette Road, Riverview, will offer a 10-week summer camp of science and technology. Campers will make animations, video games, digital movies and Web pages expressing complex scientific concepts. Campers are grouped by skill level and age. Topics include Roller Coast Mania I, Slime Time Live I, Komputer Kraze I, Creatures of the Deep, Spectacular Space Place, Creepy Crawly Critters, Amusement Park Mania, Boom Boom Pow, Komputer Kraze II and Extreme Sports.   3. Red Fox Stables, 12751 Amber Lane, Lithia, will offer summer riding camps Jun 13 to July 19 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Day campers will go on daily rides, play games on horseback, participate in horse-related crafts, learn how to groom, feed and care for horses and more. The half-day camp is $175 per week with sibling discounts available. For information, call 813-601-9516.
  4. R & R Camp, 9805 Bryant Road, Lithia, will offer a summer camp June 13 to July 8 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Lithia ranch. Beginner campers will enjoy a daily horseback ride, games, swimming in an above-ground pool, education on grooming and care of horses and farm animals, a bounce castle, sliding on the inflatable water slide, movies in the air-conditioned camp house, arts and crafts. Advanced campers will participate in three riding lessons, additional emphasis on equine education and all the fun activities beginner campers will take part in.   5. The Brandon Sports & Aquatic Center, 405 Beverly Blvd., Brandon, will offer its 2011 Summer Camp featuring weekly themed music, crafts, field trips, sports and other activities for ages 3 to 13. Parents can learn more about the camp and sign up at an open house Saturday, April 16 from 9 a.m. to noon and have the $30 registration fee waived. The cost for a full day, from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., is $125 per week. Half days, from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., is $70 per week.
