Iron Mike Foundation Ride, Concert Benefit 'Uncle Ugly'

Morning rain cleared for a perfect afternoon ride for 125 bikers at CJ's Saloon.

Early morning cloud and rainfall had Iron Mike Foundation Ride & Concert organizers and volunteers worried Sunday, Aug. 28. A memorial ride was delayed by more than an hour, but gradually more riders showed up at CJ’s Saloon at 9411 U.S. 301 S. in Riverview. No one wanted to miss this fundraising event in honor of John Michael Meek.

For those who knew Meek, AKA "Uncle Ugly," it was clear why the Children’s Home Society of Florida would've been his charity of choice.

"Uncle Ugly had a passion for children," said Angela Pottinger, CHSFL child development specialist. Pottinger credited organizer Patti Alley for the phenomenal growth of the event, which celebrated its fifth year Sunday.

They've raised more than $27,000 in the past four years. This year's goal is $15,000, said Robin Law, vice president of the Iron Mike Foundation. Sunday's turnout couldn't have been better, she said.

There was a silent auction and raffle prizes along with food and drinks and live performances by Urban Disturbance and the Greg Billings Band to entertain the crowd.

U.S. Navy veteran Shawn Colligan of Plant City learned about this charity event through American Veterans (AMVETS) Post 44 in Brandon. He came to support his fellow bikers, he said.

John Michael Meek was killed on Aug. 29, 2007, when his Harley-Davidson was hit from behind by Harry B. Taylor. Taylor was found guilty of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
