Girls Learn Leadership Skills at Camp Dorothy Thomas

Summer camp offers new fun and interactive programs.

Inspired by the popular television series "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" on CBS, girls will now have the opportunity to play detective this summer as part of a special program being offered at Camp Dorothy Thomas in Riverview.

Girls going into grades eight to 12 are invited to participate in weekly overnight summer camps throughout the season. Offering a variety of themed activities throughout each week such as Myth Busters, Extreme Adventures, Project Runway, Iron Chef, Lights! Camera! Action! and Camp Chronicles, girls are able to build their leadership skills in fun and exciting ways.

According to Susan Barnes, director of communications for the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida, girls who choose to participant in the new CSI program will learn how to investigate and solve a case, design a catapult and even create explosions. They also will enjoy regular camp activities such as archery, swimming, cookouts and campfires.

“Summer camp at Camp Dorothy Thomas provides opportunities for older girls to build their leadership skills through fun programs such as the  CSI and traditional camp activities,” said Barnes.

According to Barnes, all camp staff members and volunteers are selected on the basis of experience, the ability to serve as role models and a genuine desire to work with children – respecting each girl as an individual and allowing her to feel good about who she is. All camp staff and volunteers participate in an extensive pre-camp training.

Camps are open to all girls, whether they are Girl Scouts or not. One week of overnight summer camp is $350 while two weeks, either consecutive or mix ‘n matched, is $550.

In addition to the day and overnight summer camp opportunities at Camp Dorothy Thomas, other camps in the surrounding area offer weeklong overnight opportunities as well. Camp Scoutcrest in Odessa features aquatic activities such as kayaking, water skiing, wakeboarding and sailing, while the equestrian camp, Camp Wildwood in Wildwood, allows everyone to ride the horses. If an entire week is too long, Camp Wai Lani in Palm Harbor also offers weekend overnight opportunities for campers.
