GET OUT: Weekend Events Preview Sept. 28-30

With a variety of entertainment venues and restaurants in the area, there's no reason to spend the weekend at home. We've put together a list of fun things to do in the Bloomingdale area.

BRANDON IDOL AND TEEN IDOL

WHERE/WHEN: For the 11th year, residents will show off their vocal skills during the Brandon Idol contest Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. at the Brandon Elks Lodge, 800 Centennial Lodge Dr., Brandon. The Brandon Teen Idol contest will take place the same day, Saturday, Sept. 29, at 1 p.m. at the Brandon Elks Lodge.

WHY GO: Each year the contest raises funds for various Brandon charities. This year funds will go to the Give A Kid A Chance Campaign at the Brandon Family YMCA. The campaign provides needy children with a chance to attend summer camp at the Y. The contest gives area crooners a chance to show off their singing talents and vie for the $500 winning prize. Tickets for the adult show are $25 at the door. To reserve a seat, visit the website. Tickets for the Teen Idol contest are $15 for adults and $5 for children under 18.

RIVERVIEW HIGH TO PRESENT 'DEATHTRAP'

WHERE/WHEN: The Riverview High School Theater Department will present "Deathtrap" Thursday, Sept. 27, Friday, Sept. 28, and Saturday, Sept. 29 at 7:30 p.m. at the school theater 11311 Boyette Rd., Riverview.

WHY GO: The two-act thriller, a blend of mystery, intrigue and humor, is not suitable for children 12 and under. Tickets are $10 for adults, $3 for students, seniors and active military. Reservations are recommended. Call 813-671-5011, ext. 259. The show will repeat Oct. 11-13.

HEARTS AND HEROES

WHERE/WHEN: American Legion Alafia Post 148, 7240 U.S. 301, Riverview, will host Hearts and Heroes Saturday, Sept. 29 from noon to 4 p.m.

WHY GO: The event will feature a pig roast, entertainment and a poker hand. The cost is $15. Call 813-677-6529.

MUSIC AT THE FARM

WHERE/WHEN: The Farm, 7818 Lithia-Pinecrest Rd., Lithia, will host country gospel music Friday, Sept. 28.

WHY GO: Hamburgers, hot dogs and beverages will be available at 6:30 p.m. and the music will begin at 7 p.m. with an open mic session. At 8 p.m. The Southern Boys, Danny Ray Harris and Steve Roberson will perform along with Travis Lewis from the Grand Ole Opry.

Players of acoustic instruments who would like to play should arrive by 6 p.m. Admission is free but donations are accepted. Call 813-643-8292.

ST. STEPHEN MINISTRY FAIR

WHERE/WHEN: St. Stephen Catholic Church, 5049 Bell Shoals Rd., Valrico, will host its annual Ministry Fair in a tent on the church grounds after each Mass Sept. 29-30.

WHY GO: There will be food, games and more than 125 tables featuring ministries at the church. Call 813-689-4900.
