GET OUT: Weekend Events Preview Oct. 5-7

With a variety of entertainment venues and restaurants in the area, there's no reason to spend the weekend at home. We've put together a list of fun things to do in the Bloomingdale area.

BLESSING OF PETS

WHERE/WHEN: St. Stephen Catholic Church, 5049 Bell Shoals Rd., Valrico, will host its annual Blessing of Pets Saturday, Oct. 6 at 2 p.m. in front of the church.

WHY GO: There will be a short prayer service followed by a blessing for each pet.

DOG FEST

WHERE/WHEN: Dog Fest is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 6 from 1 to 4 p.m. at 5925 Village Center Dr., in Circa FishHawk off Boyette Road in Lithia.

WHY GO: In addition to vendor displays, Dog Fest will include music, food, drinks, contests, demonstrations, samples and raffle prizes. Prizes will be given for the best doggie costume, cutest puppy and owner/dog look-alikes. There is a $5 entry fee for each contest. There also will be pet blessings, a training demonstration and Rescue Row for those seeking a companion.

HOLIDAY CARDS FOR THE TROOPS

WHERE/WHEN: For the fifth year, Center Place, in collaboration with the Community Roundtable, will host its Holiday Cards for the Troops card-making event Saturday, Oct. 6 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Center Place, 619 Vonderburg Dr., Brandon.

WHY GO: Residents age 16 and up will create decorated cards that are blank inside to send to deployed service members. The service members will be able to write a message to loved ones in the card. Donations to participate will be accepted at the door to help with the cost of supplies and postage. The event also will include a raffle.

KIDS HELPING KIDS FASHION SHOW

WHERE/WHEN: The Emergency Care Help Organization will crown the model who raises the most money for ECHO at ECHO’s 10th annual Kids Helping Kids Fashion Show set for Saturday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m. at HCC’s Brandon campus auditorium.

WHY GO: Children ages 5 to 18 are invited to participate. Each model must raise a minimum of $100 to participate. Fashions will be provided by Kohl’s. Visit www.echofl.org to register.

YARD SALE FOR PAWS

WHERE/WHEN: Friends of Protecting Animals With Sterlization of Hillsborough County will have a garage sale Friday and Saturday, Oct. 5-6 starting at 8 a.m. at 2511 Regal River Rd., Valrico, off Lithia-Pinecrest Road south of Bloomingdale Avenue.

WHY GO: Antiques, furniture, primitives, country, shabby chic, collectibles, holiday items, sewing items, crafts, new children's toys, household goods, U of F Gator collectibles, many brand new items and stocking stuffers will be available. The sale will provide veterinary care and medical supplies for PAWS' foster animals.
