GET OUT: Weekend Events Preview Oct. 21-23

We've put together a list of fun things to do in the Bloomingdale-Riverview Patch area.

It’s Thursday, and you’ve got no idea what you’ll do for the weekend.

Patch is coming to the rescue. We’ve got the best bets for your done-work-outta-here time. Check our picks for the activities to hit and new bars/restaurants/shops to explore.

WHERE/WHEN:  is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 22, in conjunction with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. Registration is at 8 a.m. and the walk begins at 9 a.m. Oct. 22. Walkers also can pre-register at The Green Boutique, 1032 Bloomingdale Ave.

WHY GO: Walkers have two choices of routes. The Diva Strut goes from Plaza Bella to the Bloomingdale Regional Library and back. And the 5K Challenge takes walkers from Plaza Bella to Natures Way in Bloomingdale East and back.

The registration fee is $40 for individuals and $35 for members of teams of five or more. The fee includes a specially designed T-shirt and a shopping tote from Vera Bradley with goodies inside. Residents can also donate $5 for a pink ribbon to line a pathway in honor of a loved one.

WHERE/WHEN: The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce, along with Riverview High School, will host Trick or Treat Street Saturday, Oct. 22, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Riverview High School, 11311 Boyette Rd., Riverview.

WHY GO: At Trick or Treat Street, local businesses and organizations show their community spirit by dressing up, decorating a façade or booth and distributing candy or small toys to children of all ages. Prize ribbons are awarded for booth design and decoration in several categories.

There will be costume contests for children of all ages with a $3 registration fee prior to Oct. 21 or $5 registration at the event. Prizes will be awarded to the winners in each age group: 0-3 years; 4-7 years; 8-11 years; 12 and older. Registration ends 30 minutes before each contest. The costume contest for children age 0-3 years begins at 5 p.m.; 4-7 years at 5:45 p.m.; 8-11 years at 6:30 p.m.; 12 and older at 7:15 p.m.

There also will be a dog costume contest at 6 p.m. with a registration fee of $10. Proceeds benefit Critter Adoption and Rescue Effort Inc. (C.A.R.E.).

Admission is free. A pumpkin-decorating contest, food, drinks and some games will be available for an additional cost. Parking is $3. Armbands will be available for sale for unlimited use of the inflatable rides; $8 in advance or $10 at the event.

WHERE/WHEN: Boyette Springs will host its annual Community Fall Festival Saturday, Oct. 22 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Boyette Springs Park east entrance, 10419 Deepbrook Dr., and at the west entrance, 10300 Sedgebrook Drive, across from Boyette Springs Elementary School in Riverview.

WHY GO: Featured entertainment includes the Billy Bob Steinberg Comedy Spectacular, Lowe’s Build & Grow, slot car racing and prizes with Checkered Flag Entertainment, balloon animals, Touch-A-Truck, fire engines, free pony rides, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office K-9 Unit, carnival games and prizes, face painting, a coloring contest, goody bags for kids, an Ace Golf putting green contest, Baily's Bouncies' snow cones, popcorn and cotton candy, Drawing Point classes, paper airplanes with Dean Mackey, Al's Finger-Lickin' Barbecue, Crump & Conpany Caricatures for $5, fun with Purkle the Clown, Bruce Campbell, the fun weather expert, and bodybuilding tips from expert Mark Antonek. There will be raffles and more than 40 vendors as well.

In addition, there will be a costume contest at 1 p.m. Children are invited to color the Halloween coloring page on the homeowner association's website and drop it off at the festival welcome table by 1:30 p.m. Prizes will be awarded in three age categories at 2 p.m.

There also will be community information available including child ID kits, disaster preparedness tips and insurance information. The CERT team will give demonstrations on making ice without electricity and use of fire extinguishers. Sam's Club will offer hearing and vision screenings.

Everything is free except food, caricatures and vendor goods that may be available for purchase.

WHERE/WHEN: The community is invited to the world's largest happy hour during Toast the Decades, a fundraiser planned for Oct. 21 from 3 to 11 p.m. at O'Brien's Irish Pub, 701 W. Lumsden Road, Brandon.

WHY GO: Organizers are attempting to break a world record for the most people attending a happy hour. There will be live music from all the decades, drink specials and activities for the kids. Register online at http://toastthedecades.com/ and be entered to win a flat-screen TV, a half-day fishing trip and 10 percent off all meals at O'Brien's now through Oct. 21. Tokens to take part in the world's largest happy hour are $10 and include a free drink. To purchase a token, contact Mary Boor at 813-689-2119.

WHERE/WHEN: Providence Christian School will host its annual Fall Festival and Silent Auction Friday, Oct. 21, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the school gymnasium, 5416 Providence Rd., Riverview.

WHY GO: There will be carnival games, face painting and a dunk booth. Silent auction items include autographed sports memorabilia, designer colognes, gift baskets and restaurant gift cards. Admission and selected activities are free.
