GET OUT: Weekend Events Preview Nov. 16-18

With a variety of entertainment venues in the area, there's no reason to spend the weekend at home. We've put together a list of fun things to do in the Bloomingdale-Riverview area.

WHISKERS AT WINTHROP

WHERE/WHEN: Brandon Lakes Animal Hospital, 6151 Delancey Station St., Riverview, will host Whiskers at Winthrop Saturday, Nov. 17, at 2 p.m.

WHY GO: The event will feature auction items from local artists, restaurants and shops. Proceeds will go to Big Cat Rescue.

A NIGHT IN SICILY

WHERE/WHEN: The Riverview Woman's Club will host a Night in Sicily Saturday, Nov. 17 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Summerfield Crossings Golf Club, 13050 Summerfield Blvd., Riverview.

WHY GO: The event will include an array of Italian foods, a wine tasting, a wine pull, a raffle and a silent auction. Tickets are $25 and proceeds go to the Riverview High School Scholarship Fund.

TEEN COMIC CON

WHERE/WHEN: Teen Comic Con will be held Saturday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Bloomingdale Regional Library, 1906 Bloomingdale Ave., Valrico.

WHY GO: Teens will enjoy a night celebrating their favorite comic book heroes. They are invited to dress as a comic book character to win a contest, learn to draw their own comics with comic artist Andre Frattino and create candy sushi.

WESTFIELD HOLIDAY KICK-OFF

WHERE/WHEN: Westfield Brandon will host a special celebration event to kick off the holidays and the Festival of Trees, sponsored by MIX 100.7, Sunday, Nov. 18 at 2 p.m.

WHY GO: The event will include visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus and interactive family activities including ornament decorating, a scavenger hunt, food sampling and more.

BENEFIT CONCERT

WHERE/WHEN: Tadpoles at 115 E. Brandon Blvd., Brandon, will host a benefit for Daniel Oliver's family Friday, Nov. 16 from 7 to 11 p.m., featuring The High Tides Band.

WHY GO: Daniel Oliver, 19, of Dover, died Sept. 2 during a shooting in Providence Lakes. His father, Jeffrey L. Oliver, is the lead guitar player in The High Tides Band. Both his mother, Felicia, and older brother, Ryan, are cancer survivors. In addition to the concert, the event will include gift baskets, a 50-50 drawing and auctions.

HOLIDAY OUTDOOR FLEA MARKET

WHERE/WHEN: The White Rabbit Antiques, 207 S. Parsons Ave., Brandon, will host a holiday outdoor market Saturday, Nov. 17 beginning at 8 a.m.

WHY GO: The event will feature live music, homemade goodies, handcrafted items, holiday decor, vintage and antique items, furniture and jewelry.

HOLIDAY TASTE AT SAM'S CLUB

WHERE/WHEN: Sam's Club #4801, 10385 Big Bend Rd., Riverview, will host a Holiday Taste of Sam's Club Nov. 16-18 from noon to 5 p.m.

WHY GO: Come sample favorite holiday fare and see the quality and value members enjoy every day. Join now and receive up to a $20 gift card.

LITTLE MERMAID JUNIOR

WHERE/WHEN: The Florida Academy of Performing Arts will present "Little Mermaid Junior" at Music Showcase, 402 Oakfield Dr., Brandon, Friday, Nov. 16 and Saturday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 18 at 2 p.m. 

WHY GO: Children will enjoy this story of Ariel the mermaid. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children.

BRITISH-AMERICAN BLOCK PARTY

WHERE/WHEN: A British-American Block Party will take place Friday, Nov. 16 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Plaza Bella shopping center on Bloomingdale Avenue in Valrico.

WHY GO: The fun includes a James Bond-themed treasure hunt and trivia contest, Mini Cooper craziness, fish and chips provided by Cheddar Biscuit, a costume competition, music and holiday gifts. Admission is a minimum donation of $5 or the equivalent in nonperishable food for the Emergency Care Help Organization.

USED BOOK SALE

WHERE/WHEN: The Tampa Bay HEAT homeschool support group will host a used book sale Saturday, Nov. 17 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at New Life Church, 2802 E. State Road 60, Valrico.

WHY GO: All books will be priced at $2 or less, including children's books, how-to books, curriculum, fiction and classics.

There also will be a market with vendors, garage sale items, children's clothes, crafts and food.

SHOPPER'S PARADISE

WHERE/WHEN: Nativity Catholic Church's St. Jude Circle, 705 E. Brandon Blvd., Brandon, will host its fifth annual Shopper's Paradise gifts and crafts show Saturday, Nov. 17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Nativity Social Hall.

WHY GO: There will be floral arrangements, basketry, woodwork, jewelry, handcrafted items, pecans for baking, food and drinks.

TRASH TO TREASURE SALE

WHERE/WHEN: Strawberry Ridge will host its annual Trash to Treasure Sale Saturday, Nov. 17 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Strawberry Ridge Clubhouse, 3419 E. State Road 60, Valrico.

WHY GO: There will be flea market items, a bake sale and lunch.

GUARDIAN TOY RUN

WHERE/WHEN: The Guardian Toy Run will take place Saturday, Nov. 17 starting at 10 a.m. at Tampa PC Networks, 11946 Boyette Rd., Riverview.

WHY GO: The annual motorcycle ride provides toys to children in the Guardian ad Litem program. The ride will end with a party at noon at The Rack, 1025 Brandon Blvd., Brandon, where everyone is welcome to join the motorcyclists. The cost is one new toy and $10. The event includes food, drinks, a T-shirt and raffle ticket.

CORKS & FORKS

WHERE/WHEN: The Campo Family YMCA will host its annual Corks & Forks fundraiser Friday, Nov. 16 from 7 to 10 p.m. at the YMCA, 3414 Culbreath Rd., Valrico.

WHY GO: The event will feature food from local restaurants, beverages, music and silent and live auction. Proceeds will go to YMCA programs. Tickets are $75.
