GET OUT: Weekend Events Preview June 3-5

With a variety of entertainment venues and restaurants in the area, there's no reason to spend the weekend at home. We've put together a list of fun things to do in the Bloomingdale area.

What/Where:  The YMCA Youth Triathlon Series will take place June 4 at 7 a.m. at the FishHawk Ranch YMCA Express, 16144 Churchview Drive, Lithia.

What/Where: "Jekyll & Hyde" will be presented June 3-5  at The Regent, 6437 Watson Road.

Why go: The Florida Academy of Performing Arts, through special arrangements with Music Theatre International, will present "Jekyll & Hyde," the tale of the classic battle between good and evil. "Jekyll & Hyde" is based on the story by Robert Louis Stevenson. Under the direction of Miguel Oquendo, the Showcase Players, a beginning musical theatre class for teens ages 13 and up, will present 10 performances on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 3-5 and June 10-12. Performance times are Fridays at 7 p.m., Saturdays at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.  Tickets are $10 general admission and $8 for students, seniors and military.

Where/When: The Best Buddies Friendship Walk will take place June 4 with registration beginning at 7:45 a.m. at the Winthrop Town Centre, 11252 Winthrop Main St., Riverview.

Why go: There will be a 5KRun starting at 8:45 a.m. and a 1K and 5K walk starting at 9 a.m. followed by the Friendship Festival from 10:30 a.m. to noon. This event will benefit middle and high school chapters of Best Buddies, a global organization that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The event is free but participants are encouraged to raise $50 or more. Those who do will receive a race T-shirt designed for Best Buddies by artist Romero Britto. Where/When: Check out the Pickle King booth at the next FishHawk Farmer's Market scheduled for Sunday, June 5, from 9 a.m to 2 p.m. at Park Square. 

Why go: The Pickle King offers a variety of good, old-fashioned, deli-style pickles. They’ve got barrels of fresh and crispy pickles ranging from sweet to hot flavors. The full pickle menu includes deli-style-regular dills, deli-style-Kosher, Chicago style, hot pickles, Miami Babies, deli-style-“new” half sours, deli-style-New York sours, horseradish, garlic, bread and butter, Gherkins, pickled tomatoes, dill relish, hot relish, fire and ice pickles, and baby dills.  Owner, John Citarella, greets everyone with a smile and encourages customers to sample the different flavors.

Alligator Pear Fusion Tacos featuring smoked Thai chicken, Korean beef, spicy pork, sweet potato and Swiss chard tacos

Auntie M's Baked Goods featuring gourmet cookies, cupcakes, brownies, peanut and pecan brittle and muffins

Brooklyn Knish Inc. - light flour pastry dough filled with savory fillings and baked

Calling Birds Studio - handmade glass, tile and bottlecap jewelry 

Choo-Choo's Express - hot breakfast and hot lunch 

D & G Products, LLC -Grandma Grace's homemade jams, jellies and salsa 

Fresh From The Boat Seafood, LLC - shrimp, scallops, smoked fish, flounder, crab cakes 

Honey Cart - honey and related products 

Just Because Treats - a variety of rum cakes (slices and whole), chocolate pretzels and more 

Kids Organic Farm and Produce - organic and fresh local produce  

Lutz Nutz Company - roasted nuts, nutty granola, fresh-baked breads, bagels, biscotti, scones 

Ol' Kentucky Kettlecorn & Italian Ice

Onesie Tutusie featuring tutus, wands, headbands, flower clips, leotards and other handmade creations for girls 

Organo Gold hot and iced coffee, tea and hot chocolate.

Where/When: Barbara Schwabe continues her fundraising campaign for honorary mayor of Brandon Friday, June 3, with a Men's Club Sip and Puff event at Center Place starting at 6 p.m.

Why go: Gentlemen are invited to an evening of cigars, scotch and bourbon plus food. There will be a silent auction featuring hunting, fishing, golf and sports items. The cost is $25.
