GET OUT: Weekend Events Preview July 22-24

With a variety of entertainment venues and restaurants in the area, there's no reason to spend the weekend at home. We've put together a list of fun things to do in the Bloomingdale area.

It’s Thursday, and you’ve got no idea what you’ll do for the weekend.

Patch is coming to the rescue. We’ve got the best bets for your done-work-outta-here time. Check our picks for the activities to hit and new bars/restaurants/shops to explore.

WHERE/WHEN: The Darrell Sikes and Southern Sons Band, with Plant City roots, will perform at the FishHawk Ranch Park Square Summer Concert Series Friday from 7 to 10 p.m.

WHY GO: The band will offer high-energy country music for concert-goers to enjoy. This year, Newland Communities, sponsor of the concert series, is partnering with Feeding America Tampa Bay, and will host a food drive each Friday night. The concerts are free but residents are asked to bring a canned food to donate to Feeding America Tampa Bay. Those bringing a nonperishable item will receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win prizes.

WHERE/WHEN: The FishHawk Area Network Group will host its ninth annual Back-to-School Festival Saturday, July 23 from 9 a.m. to noon at the FishHawk Youth Sports Complex on FishHawk Boulevard.

WHY GO: This year’s festival will benefit local needy children by providing school supplies. It will feature more than 100 local business booths, samples from 10 restaurants, music, demonstrations, exhibits from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office and Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, giveaways and door prizes. Admission is free but $10 worth of new school supplies or a $10 cash donation is requested to benefit the YMCA's project to provide school supplies to the children of migrant farmworkers.

WHERE/WHEN: FishHawk Ranch will host a BBQ Cookoff, a day filled with friendly competition and good eats, Sunday, July 24 from noon to 2 p.m. at Park Square.

WHY GO: A maximum of 30 entries will fill the park with tempting barbecue aromas. Contestants may enter the contest as individual chefs or as a collaborative team. Chefs may begin setting up and grilling at 9 a.m. The cost is $15 per entry and tasters will pay $5 to sample the results.

WHERE/WHEN: Cami Gibertini, Brandon's 2011-12 honorary mayor, will host a Girls Night Out Celebration July 21 from 7 to 10 p.m. at Sinigual Contemporary Mexican Cuisine, 805 Brandon Town Center Mall, Brandon.

WHY GO: Come raise a glass to congratulate Gibertini and the fact that she and candidate Barbara Schwabe raised $72,000 for Brandon charities.

WHERE/WHEN: The Bloomingdale High School Class of 1991's 20-year reunion is scheduled for Saturday, July 23, at The Embassy Suites Hotel in downtown Tampa from 7 p.m. to midnight.

WHY GO: Come catch up with classmates and see how everyone has changed over the past two decades.
