GET OUT: Weekend Events Preview Aug. 31-Sept. 2

With a variety of entertainment venues and restaurants in the area, there's no reason to spend the weekend at home. We've put together a list of fun things to do in the area.

THE ODD COUPLE ON STAGE

WHERE/WHEN: Stage Door Performing Arts Inc., in conjunction with The Village Players Inc., will present Neil Simon's "The Odd Couple" Friday, Aug. 31 and Saturday, Sept. 1 at 8:15 p.m. at the James McCabe Theatre. 506 Fifth St., Valrico.

WHY GO: The show, featuring the comedic highlights of a tested friendship between the divorced Oscar Madison (Randy Magruder), a slob, and the divorcing Felix Ungar (Dave Friedman), a neat freak, premiered on Broadway in 1965, followed by both a successful television and film series. MUSIC AT THE FARM

WHERE/WHEN: Old country gospel music is on tap at The Farm, 7818 Lithia-Pinecrest Rd., Lithia, Friday, Aug. 31.

WHY GO: Hamburgers, hot dogs and beverages will be available at 6:30 p.m. and the music begins at 7 p.m. Players of acoustic instrument are invited to perform. They should arrive by 6 p.m.. Admission is free but donations are appreciates. Call 813-967-3046.

WHERE/WHEN: Young artists are invited to Center Place, 619 Vonderburg Dr., Brandon, Saturday, Sept. 1 for the annual "For the Love of Arts" Chalk Walk.

WHY GO: The Chalk Walk will kick off at 10 a.m. during which children age 3 and up are invited to create masterpieces in chalk on the sidewalks surrounding Center Place. The Chalk Walk is free but tickets are required and can be obtained at Center Place. Each young artist will receive will receive a box of chalk, a sidewalk section, coupons and freebies from local businesses. In addition, there will be demonstrations, performances, magic, face painting and music.

WHERE/WHEN: In conjunction with the Chalk Walk, the Brandon League of Fine Arts will host a "Celebration of the Arts," its second annual Artfest Fundraiser, Saturday, Sept. 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

WHY GO: The art show will feature the works of novice as well as experienced artists. In addition, there will be holiday arts and crafts available for sale and lunch to purchase. To purchase a space for the event, call Center Place at 813-685-8888 or email cpfinearts@verizon.net.
