GET OUT: Weekend Events Preview Aug. 3-5

With a variety of entertainment venues and restaurants in the area, there's no reason to spend the weekend at home. We've put together a list of fun things to do in the area.

WHERE/WHEN: The Kiwanis Club of Greater Brandon is preparing for a new school year by hosting its fourth annual Kiwanis Stuff the Bus program to benefit needy school children in the community. This year the club will partner with the Brandon Family YMCA for a kick-off event at the YMCA, 3097 S. Kingsway Rd., Seffner, Aug. 4 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

WHY GO: The event will feature Star Wars characters, food, games and information booths. The Shred-It truck also will be on hand to shred sensitive documents that can be used for identity theft. Admission is $5 worth of school supplies or $5. proceeds from the event will be divided between the Kiwanis Stuff the Bus effort and the YMCA's annual back-to-school giveaway at Camp Cristina in Riverview.

'XANADU' ON STAGE

WHERE/WHEN: The Frenzie Performance Factory will present "Xanadu," the musical on roller skates, Saturday, Aug. 4-5 in the Riverview High School auditorium, 11311 Boyette Rd., Riverview. The Saturday performance will begin at 8 p.m. and the Sunday performance at 4 p.m.

WHY GO: "Xanadu" follows the journey of a magical and beautiful Greek muse, Kira, who descends from the heavens of Mt. Olympus to Venice Beach, Calif., in 1980 on a quest to inspire a struggling artist, Sonny, to achieve the greatest artistic creation of all time - the first roller disco. But, when Kira falls into forbidden love with the mortal Sonny, her jealous sisters take advantage of the situation and chaos abounds. General admission is $15 for adults and $12 for students, military and seniors. Premium seating is available for $20. Call 813-655-0789.

WHERE/WHEN: The music continues at Park Square this Friday at 7 p.m. with the James Taylor Tribute Experience "Fire and Rain," featuring a James Taylor look-alike.

WHY GO: FishHawk Ranch’s free summer “Concerts for a Cause” series supports Feeding America Tampa Bay. All concert-goers are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items with them for Feeding America Tampa Bay. Park Square at FishHawk Ranch is located at 16144 Churchview Dr., Lithia. WHERE/WHEN: The South Shore Symphony Orchestra will present "A Collection of Overtures" Sunday, Aug. 5, at 2 p.m. at The Regent, 6437 Watson Rd., Riverview.

WHY GO: The orchestra will present Beethoven's "Egmont Overtures," Wagner's "Overture to Tannhauser," Strauss' "Overturn to Die Fledermaus," Copland's, "Outdoor Overture," Suppe's "Poet and Peasant Overture" and Verdi's "Overturn to Nabucco." Tickets are $10 and are available at the orchestra's website.

WHERE/WHEN: The 10th Annual FishHawk Area Networking Group (FANG) Back-to-School Festival will take place Aug. 5 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Campo Family YMCA gymnasium.

WHY GO: The festival will feature more than 100 local business booths, demonstrations, giveaways, doors prizes and samplings from 10 area restaurants. Admission is $10 worth of new school supplies or a $10 cash donation. The supplies will benefit the Y’s migrant children effort. Last year, more than 400 students received supplies as the result of the event.

LOCAL SHOPPING EVENT

WHERE/WHEN: Seven local businesses will host their first Exclusive Shopping Event to allow residents to sample their products and services Sunday, Aug. 5 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Pavilion Clubhouse, 3330 Manor Cove Circle, Riverview.

WHY GO: This is a chance to really shop local.
